ACTIVE LIFESTYLES SLOW AGING


Health researchers from King’s College in London have just
concluded a study that suggests people who are physically active
in their free time may be biologically younger than their less
active peers. The research was published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association, January 28th, 2008.

The researchers looked at the physical activity levels, smoking
habits and socioeconomic status of 2,401 study participants. The
researchers also collected DNA samples from participants and
examined certain DNA characteristics that change as part of the
aging process and therefore may serve as a marker of a person's
biological age. Overall, the study participants had changes to
the DNA characteristics that come with aging, but those who were
more active in their leisure time showed less of a change.

"A sedentary lifestyle increases the propensity to aging-related
diseases and premature death. Inactivity may diminish life
expectancy not only by predisposing to aging-related diseases,
but also because it may influence the aging process itself,"
study author Lynn F. Cherkas, of King's College London, said in a
prepared statement.

"The U.S. guidelines recommend that 30 minutes of moderate-
intensity physical activity at least five days a week can have
significant health benefits," the researchers wrote. "Our results
underscore the vital importance of these guidelines. They show
that adults who partake in regular physical activity are
biologically younger than sedentary individuals. This conclusion
provides a powerful message that could be used by clinicians to
promote the potential anti-aging effect of regular exercise."

Walking for 30 minutes a day is the easiest way to add more
physical activity to your life. If you’ve been inactive lately,
start off slowly with 5 minutes a day, and then gradually build
up to 10 minutes, 15 minutes and on to 30 minutes. You’ll have
more energy, you’ll feel better, you’ll sleep better and you’ll
live longer.

I'm sorry but we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

With regard to autism and vaccine, a lot of research has been done since the 'hypothesis' was first muted, and does not support that hypothesis.

Polio still causes devastation to lives in the Third World. In 'western' countries we are not used to babies dying from infections anymore, our grandparents were very familiar with this, and in the 'third world' it still happens. Those children that don't die are often left with permanent disabilities, eg deafness, blindness, paralysis.

When we consider the 'effects' of vaccines, we should also consider the 'effects' of not having vaccines. Not vaccinating ones kids, I guess, is one's right, but if those children then socialise with other children, it is not fair on them or their families. For example, a mother might choose not to have any more children, and once a child is old enough, rubella may not be 'threat' to themselves. But what about the pregnant mother of the friends of your child, why should her unborn child be put at risk by your 'selfishness'? I like the US system that requires a child's vaccine record before allowing them to register in school and wish we had that in the UK too.

I know, I know, what I've said above is harsh, and many (all?) of you will disagree. I'm sorry if it has caused you offence, I did not write it to be provocative/offensive, but because I know from friends and family the awful consequences when children die in childhood from (easily prevented) infectious diseases.

OJ - I don't expect to change your mind, I just wanted to put the 'other' view here too. xx

I think I would have to agree with you on vaccinations. It's definitely up to the parents to decide, but only for their children, not for others'. And that's what they do, in effect, when they don't vaccinate and then send their children to school. But that's my feeling about any life choices - people can do or not do whatever they want - but, as with any freedom - that right ends where others' begin.

VACCINE COMPANIES INVESTIGATED FOR MANSLAUGHTER


A formal investigation has been launched by French authorities against two managers from drug companies GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi Pasteur. A second investigation for manslaughter has also been opened against Sanofi Pasteur MSD.

The investigations are in response to allegations that the companies failed to fully disclose side effects from an anti-hepatitis B drug used between 1994 and 1998.

During this time, close to two-thirds of the French population, and almost all newborn babies, received a hepatitis B vaccine. The vaccination campaign was halted after concerns rose over the shotís side effects.

Thirty plaintiffs, including the families of five people who died after the vaccination, have launched a civil action in the case against the drug companies.



Dr. Mercola's Comments


In the United States, the hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for all newborns before they are discharged from the hospital. These recommendations are inexcusable.

It finally seems that the drug companies will be held responsible for the consequences of giving this dangerous vaccine to infants.

Why it Makes No Sense to Give the Hepatitis B Vaccine to Newborns

Folks, letís make on thing perfectly clear here, hepatitis B is VERY difficult to catch. You nearly always need to have blood or sexual contact of some sort with an infected carrier. That is why the main risk factors for hepatitis B are IV drug abusers and those who engage in sex with multiple partners.

This, of course, makes it nearly impossible for a newborn to contract hepatitis B, unless his mother already has it.

Further, vaccine-derived immunity is thought to be short-lived, and between 30 percent to 50 percent of vaccinated individuals may lose their antibodies within seven years.

Meanwhile, up to 60 percent of people who initially respond will lose detectable antibodies within 12 years. So that means that by the time these newborns get to the age when they could potentially engage in the risky behaviors that would put them at risk of hepatitis B, their childhood vaccine will provide little to no protection.

The central nervous system of a newborn infant is also particularly susceptible to toxic influences. This is one of the reasons why the hepatitis B vaccine is such a problem. If it were given later in life, as is done in many other countries, it would not be as problematic.

Even so, this vaccine is still associated with numerous side effects, such as an increased risk of multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid diseases.

Do Your Homework Before Vaccinating: The Drug Companies Wonít do it For You

Aside from highlighting the extreme lack of common sense that goes along with vaccinating a newborn against a disease they have a rare chance of getting until theyíre much older, this article points out, once again, that the drug companies are not on your side.

Their primary motivation is in making profits, and if that means covering up side effects to make you believe a vaccination is safe, they will likely do it.

Remember, you do have the right to refuse vaccinations, and there are two basic axioms you should never forget.

1. Nobody, anywhere or any time and under any circumstances has the right or power in this country to immunize you or your children against your will and conviction. If they attempt to do so, you can legally charge them with "assault with a deadly weapon" and have the full resources of the law behind you.

2. At all times in attempting to avoid unwanted immunization, you have the Law of the Land behind you. Those who would try to vaccinate you against your will are on very shaky ground. Into every compulsory immunization law in America are written legal exceptions and waivers, which are there specifically to protect you from the attempted tyranny of officialdom. It is not only your right, but your obligation to use them, if this is what your conscience tells you.

TEENS: EAT MORE - WEIGH LESS

New research from the University Of Minnesota School Of Public
Health shows that teenagers who eat breakfast on a regular basis
tend to weigh less, exercise more, and eat a healthier diet than
teens that usually skip breakfast. The research is published in
the March, 2008, issue of the medical journal Pediatrics.

The study followed 2,216 adolescents and their lifestyle habits
for five years beginning at age 14. The researchers were
surprised to discover that the more regularly the teens ate
breakfast, the lower their body mass index was. Body mass index,
or BMI, is a ratio of height and weight. Those who always skipped
breakfast on average had a higher BMI.

According to previous research, 12 to 34 percent of children and
teens age 6 to 19 regularly skip breakfast and we also know that
25% of 6 to 19 year olds are overweight or obese. The researchers
also warned about rates of obesity, which have doubled in
children and nearly tripled in adolescents over the past two
decades, according to a 2007 report by the U.S. Surgeon General’s
Office. Obesity has been clearly linked to high cholesterol, high
blood pressure, asthma and diabetes.

Many people assume that skipping meals will help them to lose
weight. In reality, when we skip a meal the body thinks that food
is scarce so it slows the metabolism protect us from starving -we
then have less energy so we burn fewer calories. On top of that,
the next meal that we eat after skipping a meal is converted to
fat and stored around the waste and hips as protection from
starvation. The net result of skipping meals, especially
breakfast, is a slower metabolism, less energy and more
production of body fat.

During the winter at altitudes above 35 degrees, there is minimal previtamin D3 production in the skin. Darker skin pigmentation, application of sunscreen, aging and clothing can also have a dramatic effect on previtamin D3 production.


However, at the other end of the scale, excessive exposure to sunlight does not result in vitamin D overdoes, because previtamin D3 and vitamin D3 are photolyzed to biologically inert chemicals before they can build up to dangerous levels.

I believe the evidence is quite clear; your likelihood of developing deadly skin cancer from sun exposure is nowhere near as high as you have been led to believe in the past. The benefits of normalizing your vitamin D levels FAR outweigh any risk you may have from optimal sun exposure.

Why Anti-Tanning Propaganda Takes Lives


In a groundbreaking study, researchers from the Mooreís Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) concluded that increasing the intake of vitamin D3 throughout the world could easily prevent diseases Ė including 16 types of cancer -- that would otherwise claim close to 1 million lives each year worldwide.


The truth is, this pervasive and persistent anti-tanning campaign has not done you any favors. It has enriched sun lotion manufacturers, but most likely caused more disease than it prevented.



The only risks of UVB come from overexposure. This can be greatly minimized by avoiding sunburn, and eating a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants. The recommendation to never go out in the sun without wearing sunscreen, however, is simply misguided advice. Slathering on sunscreen will effectively shield you from the sunís inherent health benefits, so your body will not synthesize vitamin D properly.


Itís also important to remember that you can develop sun damage even with sunscreen. Sunscreens donít stop the damage from occurring, they simply stops the burn. But damage can still occur on a cellular level.


Even worse, most sunscreens contain toxic chemicals that absorb through your skin, adding to your toxic load and even increasing your cancer risk.




Individual Variables That Affect Your Vitamin D Levels


Itís important to bear in mind that everyone responds differently to sunlight, depending on factors such as:
  • Antioxidant levels, and diet in general
  • Age
  • Skin color
  • Current tan level
  • Latitude and altitude (elevation)
  • Cloud cover and pollution
  • Ozone layer
  • Surface reflection
  • Season
  • Time of day
A person with dark skin, for example, may need as much as ten times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a person with pale skin.


You will need to carefully determine your own sunlight needs and tolerances, and learn what kind of exposure you need to tan without burning. Letís look at how a few of these individual variables can affect your vitamin D levels, and the amount of sun exposure you might need.




How Antioxidants and Vitamins Can Help Prevent Sunburn


You may not realize that the amount of antioxidants that you have in your skin plays a major role in your development of sunburn. The more antioxidants you take in, the lower your risk of sunburn. Foods containing effective antioxidants to boost your ďinternal sunscreenĒ include whole fresh vegetables and fruits such as:
  • Goji berries (not the juice)
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
Vitamins A and C are also vital as your cells use these vitamins to regulate both light absorption and protection against overexposure. According to nutritional researcher Krispin Sullivan, Scandinavians and other very light skinned people can benefit tremendously from making sure they are sufficient in these vitamins as it will protect their skin from burning too quickly.




Safe Tanning Guidelines


If your skin is unused to the sun, it is important to build up your tolerance regularly and gradually. Itís good to start early in the year, in the spring and early summer. This will prepare your skin for the stronger sunlight later in the year.


At the beginning of the season, go out gradually and limit your exposure to perhaps as little as 10 minutes a day. Progressively increase your time in the sun so that in a few weeks, you will be able to have normal sun exposure with little risk of skin cancer.
Time of Day -- Early morning is, for similar reasons, the best time to sunbathe if you have not already built up a base tan, because youíre less likely to burn in the mild morning sun than later in the day. In addition, itís best to sunbathe when the temperature is below 64 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius), so that you donít overheat.



Regular Intervals -- Regular sunbathing is extremely important; you canít cram all of your sun exposure into a two or three week vacation period and expect to experience the benefits.

Itís also important to treat your tanning as a medicine and control the dosage; frequent, short periods of exposure are best. You donít want to overindulge or skip too many days. Regular exposure actually protects against skin cancer, but intermittent overexposure can increase the danger.

Show Some Skin -- A common myth is that occasional exposure of the face and hands to sunlight is "sufficient" for vitamin D nutrition. For most of us, this is an absolutely inadequate exposure to move vitamin levels to the healthy range of 45-55 ng/ml. For optimal benefit, strive to have at least 40 percent of your skin uncovered.



Optimal Exposure Time -- In Caucasian skin, equilibrium occurs within 20 minutes of ultraviolet exposure. It can take 3 to 6 times longer for darkly pigmented skin to reach the equilibrium concentration of skin vitamin D.


So, bearing in mind that you need to gradually increase your time, starting in the spring, you should be aiming towards exposing large areas of your skin to the sun, anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours at a time, depending on your skin type and environmental factors.
A light-skinned person fairly far from the equator (such as in the UK or the northern U.S.) needs at least three of these 20 minute sessions per week, in bright midday sunlight and with few clothes. Longer will be needed if sunbathing occurs at off-peak times for ultraviolet light (before 12 PM or after 3 PM) or at the beginning or end of the summer (April or September).
A dark-skinned person, of course, should be outside significantly longer.

Using Your Skin as a Guide-- If you have light-colored skin, you can use the color of your skin to tell you when youíve had enough sun and itís time to get in the shade (or cover up using a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and a hat). Stay out just long enough so that your skin turns the very lightest shade of pink.

Remember that continuing UV exposure beyond the minimal dose required to produce skin redness will not increase your vitamin D production any further.

CINNAMON


The use of Cinnamon as a spice and as a medicine dates back to 2000 BC. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day significantly reduces blood sugar levels in diabetics, a study has found. The effect, which can be produced even by soaking a cinnamon stick your tea, could also benefit millions of non-diabetics who have blood sugar problem but are unaware of it.

The discovery was initially made by accident, by Richard Anderson at the US Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland. "We were looking at the effects of common foods on blood sugar; one was the American favorite, apple pie, which is usually spiced with cinnamon. We expected it to be bad. But it helped," he says.


The active ingredient in cinnamon turned out to be a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP. In test tube experiments, MHCP mimics insulin, activates its receptor, and works synergistically with insulin in cells.


To see if it would work in people, Alam Khan, who was a postdoctoral fellow in Anderson's lab, organized a study in Pakistan. Volunteers with Type 2 diabetes were given one, three or six grams of cinnamon powder a day, in capsules after meals.


All responded within weeks, with blood sugar levels that were on average 20 per cent lower than a control group. Some even achieved normal blood sugar levels. Tellingly, blood sugar started creeping up again after the diabetics stopped taking cinnamon.


In the volunteers, the Cinnamon also lowered blood levels of fats and "bad" cholesterol, which are also partly controlled by insulin. And in test tube experiments it neutralized free radicals, damaging chemicals which are elevated in diabetics.


Cinnamon's essential oils also qualify it as an "anti-microbial" food, and cinnamon has been studied for its ability to help stop the growth of bacteria as well as fungi, including the commonly problematic yeast Candida.

ONE SMALL CHANGE


Milling is the process that turns brown rice into white rice by removing the outer layer known as the bran layer - this alters the nutritional value of the rice. The complete milling process that creates white rice from brown rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids. In short, brown rice is a fiber-rich whole grain whereas white rice is simply a refined and nutritionally depleted processed food.

In March of 2006, research reported in the journal Agricultural Research, Nancy Keim and a team at the USDA ARS Western Human Nutrition Center studied 10 women age 20-45 who ate a whole grain diet for three days, then ate the same foods but with refined grains in place of whole grains. Blood samples at the end of each 3-day period showed that the refined grains diet caused a significant increase in triglycerides and a worrisome protein called "apolipoprotein CIII" (apoCIII), both of which have been associated with increased risk of heart disease.

At the University of Utah, in a study of over 2000 people, a team led by Dr. Martha Slattery found that high intakes of whole grains, such as brown rice, reduced the risk of rectal cancer 31%. They also found that a high-fiber diet, 34 grams or more of fiber per day, reduced rectal cancer by an impressive 66%. The findings were published in the February 2004 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In a Study presented at American Heart Association Conference, March 2006, overweight children, age 9-15, spent two weeks on an all-you-can-eat diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein, while exercising 2.5 hours each day. University of California researchers led by Dr. James Barnard reported that in just two weeks the children's cholesterol levels dropped an average of 21%, while insulin levels fell 30%.

One small change you can make is serving whole grain brown rice in place of processed white rice. Even though this is a small change to make it offers tremendous benefits to your family and children. The habits your children learn from you while young will stay with them for a lifetime. Learning to eat more whole grains like brown rice offers lifelong health benefits to your children.
