LEGEND SOCCER COMPANY
Do you like soccer (or, as the rest of the world calls it, football)? Dirk does in a big way, and it has become a family affair.

Dirk's son Roland and 2 friends have started Legend Soccer Company,  developing innovative, sustainable soccer gear (and only soccer gear). Learn about Legend Soccer Company at the link above. Dirk not only endorses Legend Soccer, he's involved with it - "and not only because Roland is my son."

Default Published articles?

How many articles and essays has Dirk published? I've read Dig Deep, And It's All Mickey Mouse's Fault and Lost In Castration, but I don't know if there are more of them published. Using the forum's search tool I found a couple of links from Blockbuster, but they are broken and I don't know if they lead to the same articles or different ones.

And what about the short stories that he mentions in Kamikaze Cowboy? Has he ever published any of them?

Ro, odd that you should ask. A couple days ago I found the old website that I think was the official site before DBC became the official one. I don't know how I came across it and couldn't get back to it except through History.

The beginning of another book is there but looks like it was forgotten. Appears the whole site has been forgotten. Here's the link:

web.archive.org/web/20040605080449/https://www.kamikazecowboy.com/

All those articles out on the Internet - why aren't they here?

Oh my God, THANK YOU! I was searching for more articles and it turns out that he had the beginning of a new book out there all this time!

It's so unusual to find people who write so powerfully, so clear and to the point. Not looking for social acceptance, just telling it as they believe it. That's Dirk's truth and you can take it or leave it. It really takes courage to write what he writes and to be so open about his ideas in a world where some people need to attack others for what they believe.

Dirk has me hooked. I'd love to say a lot about his writings, but I can't do it without getting too personal, so I'll just shut up and keep reading. Anyway, all I could say can be reduced to believing in what he says or not and I sure do.

Thanks again, Ojai. This made my night.

Ro, do you have links to any of those articles? Been years since I read them. I'm looking for the article about "Cahoots." I think it was a separate article but it may have been part of another one. Any link is appreciated.

Hi All, I am new here and a bit overwhelmed with all the info on this site! But it seems difficult to find published articles or interviews with Dirk about his works. (Besides of course BSG & The A-Team).
About "Cahoots" for instance there is not much to find about what brought Dirk to write and direct it, how the cast was assembled, how his ex-wife got cast, how it was for his son (did he watch the movie being this young), how Anne Lockhart came to co-direct, how it was financed, why he dedicated it to Gloria Swanson's husband, If there is a reason Patsy Kline's music was used, why the main character comes from Alaska (is it a coincidence he also made a movie "Alaska", his brother lived there for a while, ...) I really cannot find any feedback on this film (except for why it did not came out on DVD).
Does anyone know if there is some kind of archive of interviews with and articles about dirk's works?

Hello Wim, and Welcome to DBC. So happy you found us!

Dirk has spoken many times about Cahoots in interviews but I've never found one specifically for it. What I remember is this - he said the movie is a sort of response to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He said that movie was fantasy and those characters would not be that way. (In my own words, please excuse). George Roy Hill, the director, asked him to write it the way he thought it should be and Cahoots is the result. Hill read the script and never spoke to Dirk again. Some years later someone offered Dirk a lot of money to make the film which he did.

There are many interviews posted here, and some links. I'm trying to bring all of them to this site, but I know they are not 'catalogued' properly. That is being worked on.

I don't know why it doesn't go to DVD but I do know there is another film out there with the same title, also about two friends. Cahoots is listed at Movies Unlimited and has the cast from both those movies listed as one. I ordered the movie and it turned out to be about 2 very young men. I email Movies Unlimited about their mistake. They said they would pass my email to the proper department but nothing happened. The movie is still listed with Dirk as a cast member. Perhaps they do that to sell the movie that no one would buy otherwise.

I don't know why his ex is in it. They have children, so perhaps they try to get along. I don't think Anne Lockhart was the co-director. She was co-producer. Dirk was director and writer.

Again, Welcome to the site, hope you enjoy yourself.

Thanks again ojai22! Happy that you react so quickly!
I guess I have to dig some more into this, watch and read interviews, ...
I saw the movie on youtube and although it is a bit "dated" now, I quite enjoyed it (despite the poor image quality)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid sheds a good light on it! (Made me think of Tarantino films)

I just happened to be onsite when you were! And as I have been talking with you I see how the articles, etc., should be set up. So complicated and yet so simple. I am formulating a plan........

I have been dropping by from time to time and love the way you "guys" keep this forum alive and spreading the fun! I catch myself often laughing out loud! I hope to add my humble contribution, although I am a reader more than a writer.
The main remark as newbe was that although the forum is alive and packed with info, the website on itself seems to have gone to sleep. (eg. if you look at the actor/theater tab ... there is practically nothing. If I then start searching the internet or even the forum it is easy to find more info)

I noticed that too, Wim! I think it's because the regular website doesn't get all that much traffic. And like you said, there's a lot to be found on other sites. "Unofficial" sites, FB pages and Twitter gather a lot from fans.

The other reason for it might be that Dirk needs to approve the material posted here - not within the forum but on the main site - because it's his official website. (Is that right, John?)

If we could open up the webpage content to "crowd source" materials, I'm sure a bunch of us would be interested in posting info/photos. I just don't know if that's possible on a site like this... I'm not sure all servers support the wiki approach.

I knew there had to be a thread on "Lost in Castration" somewhere on here...

In a BSG Facebook group I belong to, someone shared Dirk's article. Most of the group members are men, so most of the comments are in agreement, but of course there's already one female comment calling "misogynist!" Since I'm a female who does NOT think this is misogyny, I felt compelled to comment with my own two cents. Somehow, in the process of writing the comment, I realized what has actually happened in the film and TV industry that has led to the drastically different treatment of both genders then and now, so I thought I would share the comments I posted on here as well:

"As a woman, I agree. What I think has happened is that the change of leadership and driving ideologies in Hollywood have reversed 180° with regards to gender. Early on, TV execs, directors, etc. were largely men, and so there was a more accurate depiction of masculinity in male characters, but greater tendency to objectify female characters. Women, of course, had a problem with objectification, but when over time the decision-makers included a lot more females or radically "feminist" males, the female characters got more attention and a realistic treatment, while the male characters ended up being objectified. Basically, the gender in power portrayed the other gender the way they wanted them to be rather than the way they are. What we need in today's media is a third approach that portrays men and women as equals, but with accurate reflection of what makes them truly masculine and feminine - beautiful and complementary differences, in my opinion. With the growing movement to abolish all concept of binary gender, however, the likelihood of media celebrating what makes us male and female, and essentially human, is slim to none.

And to clarify, when I refer to objectification by either gender, that not only includes the obvious focus on physical characteristics as gratifying, but also the desire to have the other gender's personality be more conducive to their becoming a sexual object. Men portrayed women as helpless, in need of a rescuer, and unquestioning in their admiration of everything about the man, while women have portrayed men as unintelligent, brawn without brain, unable to function in life without the superior wisdom of the woman. Either portrayal is unquestionably dehumanizing."

Agree wholeheartedly with the above, particularly the part about fabricating brainless, spineless male characters in order to make the females look more dominating... Anyone who has kids can probably attest to the fact that there hasn't been a strong, intelligent male hero in kids' movies in years... (Have you seen "The Incredibles 2"?) Even the superhero genre - which supposedly bases characters on their original comic book roles - does so a bit apologetically, giving the men humorous flaws while giving females the upper hand as much as possible.

Here is the last of the old site - (I think)

https://web.archive.org/web/200406050...azecowboy.com/

Howdy pardner. If you're here by accident, hang on to your aura. If you're here by design, pull a chair to the fire, have a hot bancha (and a stogie if you're an afficionado) and enjoy this Kamikaze Cowboy's ride across the Cyber-plain of Truth.

For a man such as myself who cooks his rice on a wood stove (Hallelujah fellow brother's of the grain), launching a website brings a new meaning to the word "paradox". But that's where all truth lies buried, according to George Bernard Shaw, in paradox. So maybe this actor/writer/director (more of that anon) philosopher and wit might just be onto something . . .

Now about that "directing". Twenty years in acting didn't destroy my ability to "think" . . . . which in and of itself, is more amazing than defeating cancer . . . . and so I was able to become a writer. And just when I thought I had found my true calling, some very wise (and rich) man gave me a whole bunch of $$$ to turn one of my provocative screenplays into an actual FILM. And with me "at the helm" . . . as they say in certain parts of Southern California. So soon, I will be in that rare position of having no one else to blame but myself as I turn paper into celluloid.

It's called CAHOOTS. I came up with the idea 26 years ago while sitting poolside with George Roy Hill, Paul Newman and Robert Redford. George encouraged me to put it down on paper. I did so. He read it immediately. And never spoke to me again. Thus began the journey of CAHOOTS, a script that has been thrown against more walls in anger than any other in the history of Hollywood. I did the research. A script that has had people not only fired up, but fired. That has resulted in my being called more names than Linda Tripp or Ken Starr. And now, 26 years after it's birth, it will have it's revenge and be born into the annals of filmdom.

The first 25 years of waiting are the toughest. A good lesson for anyone aspiring to any sort of career in Hollywood.

Remember that the most important thing in life is the time you spend with your CHILDREN. All else is just Waiting for Godot.

Yippee ty, yi, yay have a blast little doggies and I'll talk to you soon.

Dirk Benedict
Actor/Writer/Director/Woodchopper/Cook...... Dad.

Okay, this is the last - really the last - of the old site. (I think)

DIRK BENEDICT

A Biography

Dirk Benedict, who for five years was known to millions of viewers as 'The Face' on the popular NBC Series THE A-TEAM, is perhaps on of the most refreshing and down-to-earth actors today. A native of Montana, Dirk was raised in White Sulphur Springs, a small town so far removed from Hollywood that there were no movie theaters of television throughout his childhood, 'Entertainment' for him was walking the mountains in the great outdoors of 'Big Sky Country.' And outstanding athlete who lettered in three sports during High School, he was elected to the All-State Football Team in his Senior year. He also had his own Dixieland Dance band in which he played the trombone. At this point in his life, he couldn't decide whether he wanted to become another Paul Hornung or Tommy Dorsey.

He attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington on a Football Scholarship. During his freshman year destiny stepped in when his football playing buddies dared him to audition for the Spring Musical "Showboat." It resulted, much to his dismay, in playing the lead, "Gaylord Ravenal." The next three years found him playing countless leading roles in the university's Theater Department. Upon graduation, with a degree in Music, Dirk decided to pursue acting. He began a two-year training program at Meadowbrook Theater in Detroit, Michigan, under the tutelage of John Fernald, who had been the Principal of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London for fifteen years. After fulfilling the rigorous demands of Fernald's acting program, Dirk was offered a job in Fernald's Professional Repertory Co. This was followed with a season at Seattle Repertory Theater in Washington and later he spent a season with the Repertory Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During this period Shaw, Ibsen and Shakespeare were his meal ticket. In between seasons, Dirk did summer stock around the country playing such roles as 'Ensign Pulver' in "Mr. Roberts" and the leads in "Star Spangled Girl," "Barefoot in the Park," and numerous other plays and musicals.

Shortly after moving to New York, Dirk landed a role in " Abelard and Heloise" starring Keith Michel and Diana Rigg, which played both on Broadway and in Los Angeles. Two weeks after the show closed on Broadway, Dirk was on his way to Sweden to star in his first film, "Georgia, Georgia" with the late Diana Sands. Filmed entirely in Sweden, the film was written by best-selling author, Maya Angelou.

Upon his return to America, Dirk was cast in the lead in "Butterflies Are Free" on Broadway. The late Gloria Swanson, whose career spanned the entire history of film, played his mother. Their mother/son relationship transcended the stage and Ms. Swanson shared with Dirk all her well kept dietary secrets for health and longevity.

After "Butterflies Are Free" closed on Broadway., Dirk received an offer to do the play in Hawaii with Barbara Rush. While there, he also appeared as a guest lead in an episode of "Hawaii Five-O." This marked his first appearance on television.

Before he had time to return to New York, Hollywood Producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown saw his performance in "Hawaii Five-O" and cast Dirk as the lead in their new psycho-thriller, "SSSSS," in which he was transformed into a King Cobra. This was followed with a starring role opposite Twiggy in her first American film, "W." Shortly thereafter, Dirk was offered the lead in Aaron Spellings television series, "Chopper One" for ABC. following it's cancellation after one season, he left his acting career for nearly three years. During which time he spent many months in the Mountains of Montana and fulfilling another dream, which was to 'see' every state in the United States.

Dirk returned to acting after these years of far-flung gallivanting with a tour of the East Coast in "Li'l Abner" with Lucy Arnaz. In 1978, producer Glen Larsen offered Dirk the starring role of 'Starbuck' in his highly promoted space-adventure television series, "Battlestar Galactica" on ABC. It propelled him into the National spotlight. After "Battlestar Galactica," Dirk returned to his first love, the theater, where he broke box office records playing 'Curley' in "Oklahoma" and 'Starbuck' in "The Rainmaker" on the John Kenley Theater circuit. His latest stage appearance was as "Hamlet," off Broadway, in New York.

Despite his active career in television and on the stage, Dirk has starred in numerous Theatrical Motion Pictures, including Alaska, SSSSS, Ruckus, Under Ground Aces, Body Slam, Blue Tornado, Scavenger Hunt, Feminine Touch.

Dirk is also a professional writer. His autobiography, CONFESSIONS OF A KAMIKAZE COWBOY was published by Avery Publishing Group in 1991. In it, he details his wild, quixotic journey from the hayfields of Montana to the sound stages of Hollywood. It also covers his bout with Cancer of the Prostate, which he had in 1975, and how he conquered it through diet. His latest book, AND THEN WE WENT FISHING (Avery), is the true story of becoming and losing a Father. He is currently at work finishing MONTANA MEMOIRS: Notes from a dangerous wordsmith, a collection of short stories covering his years growing up in Montana.

He has written two original stage plays, PUPPY DOG TALES and ACTING BECOMES HER, and several screenplays. including adaptations of both his books. He will soon make his directorial debut directing his own original screenplay, CAHOOTS.
