On Posting Artists Art on Forums

Ok so this got asked on DBC and I thought I'd answer it in a blog, while I have time:
QUESTIONS:
How do artists feel about having their art reposted in a forum?
ANSWER:
It depends
Some artists won't care, some will react as though you killed their baby.
It all depends.
If you do re-post someone's art, generally the best thing to do is to credit the artist be name (and really it is only polite to give credit to the artist, yeah?), which was done here every time art was posted IIRC, so I'd think it should be fine.
Again though, some artists don't like it at all, even with their name.
The reason is, forum reposting has a stigma attached to it because usually people don't put a name with it, which is how an artist's art ends up on for sale on a mug on cafepress. People see pretty art, see no name, and for some reason think it's ok to take.
I don't remotely think that problem would exist here, I'm just explaining why sometimes artists get mad at their art being on forums period.
So really it depends entirely on the artist.
But as long as you put the artists name and a link to their gallery, I'd think 90% of the time it's gonna be fine.
The other thing you can do is just note the artist and let them know the art is reposted. That way, if it is an issue, they can request you take it down.
