Default Carnival

Hi friends!

Do you have Carnival in your countries?
In Italy today it's the last day (and the most important one) of this festivity...

We don't have holidays for Carnival, but there are many parties where you go dresses up as what you prefer...
That's cool...

we eat lots of Frittelle (fried sweeties) and other things... :P

Hello Sara,
I heard about Venedig-Carnival in Hamburg last week. But I was sooo sick, I only
heard about from that in the radio.

In Hamburg its not so big but in Köln is BIG Carnival. Tomorrow it's Aschermittwoch,
and then it's finished.

Many big Greetings

Petra

I'm not sure what Carnival actually is. I guess the only thing we would have over here would either be the 4th of July celebrations, or the county/state fairs in the fall.

Fat Tuesday. Carnivale (especially famous in Rio, too). They all grew out of the "last fling before Lent begins" parties. Lent begins tomorrow.

'Pancake Tuesday' just doesn't have the of a 'Brazilian Mardi Gras', but I do feel homely/homesick when I start flipping my crepes ... with no one to gasp in awe and wonder except me!
PS Tried buckwheat pancakes (with no eggs or dairy) this year, and they were yummy!

Hi everybody!!!!!!!

Petra, you're right.. Carnival in Venice (Venedig - Venezia) is almost as famous as that in Rio..
It's an international event...
My Uni is in Venice and in this period it's really a mess to go there.. for students and inhabitants... but for tourists it's incredible!!
https://www.segnalidivita.com/carnevale_di_venezia/

ostarella, don't worry! That's not a very famous...
it's a period of feast before Lent..
and in this period there are parties and funny traditions..
dressing-up, fanvy dress parade, and so on...
In italy we say: a carnevale ogni scherzo vale = during carnival each joke is allowed
Fat Tuesday (yesterday) is the last day of these 4 weeks and it's the most important day.. Then it arrives Mercoledi delle ceneri (your Aschermittwoch, Petra!!) and the Lent starts..
Yesterday there were parades, exibitions... and many Frittelle to eat:

Wow Sara.....the carnival looks great It does sound like a similar thing to our Shrove Tuesday (pancake day) that was yesterday....& today is the beginning of Lent. I find it interesting to see how we celebrate the same festivities in our own countries.......wouldn't you agree??

Smile Pancake day.....

Well on "Pancake Day".... we eat our pancakes with various fillings, either sweet or if you prefer savoury. (I put a link on our daily thread on Fanorama about pancake day). Mmmmmmm the pancakes we had last night were delicious....well it's only once a year.....we have to spoil ourselves once in a while

Well, duh - once I get my brain going. That would probably be like Mardi Gras down in New Orleans. I don't know of any other place in the States that has a big celebration like that, though.

Most cities actually do have some kind of Mardi Gras celebration - "Mardi Gras" is "Fat Tuesday" in French, I believe - but they pale in comparison to New Orleans'.

The larger the Catholic population, the more substantial the "Fat Tuesday" celebrations are likely to be.

Yes ostarella and yes Dawg..
Mardi Gras is French and it's the literally translation of "martedì grasso" (Italian) which means Fat Tuesday.

That's a popular feast whose origins were in the Middle age in Europe..
it was considered a sort of transgressive occasion to dress up and become somebody else.
Now it's just funny...

Jules..... I'm sure they were really really good!!!

Hallo my friends, excuse me for absence ... LOL
I went back to work.
We are in the carnaval. Very hot, very samba, joy!
I do not live in Rio, the carnaval made in this state is the postcard from Brasil to the world. In Northeastern Brasil, is also a great street carnaval.
The parade of samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, tell stories of our people, the world's history, and social problems with art, luxury and joy.
It is a wonderful and unforgettable spectacle.
Today is the last day of Carnaval.
Tomorrow is Wednesday ash.
Despite the joy many problems occur due to excess of drink and drugs.
A kiss to all!
Come learn about Carnaval in Brasil ...

We don't have Carnival here....or at least not that I am aware of.
It would be toooo cold, as we have had a bunch of snow and are going back into the -20's again.
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, I haven't decided what to give up for Lent, I guess I better hurry up and decide!
Anyway, enjoy the day everyone!
Hugs to all
Sara, so glad to hear from you again. I do hope you are feeling better, please let me know what is new!

Happy carnival for everyone!
Specially in these countries where it's more important: Brasil (Rio), Italy (Venice) and around I don't know.
Here there is some Carnival Parties in Barcelona but in special in villages in the South of Catalonia, but where is more important the Carnival in Spain is in the Canarian Islands. There this time is a big party and they've days off at work for to celebrate it.
Happy Pancake Day too!
