On a political forum, one of which I've been reading to get the latest goings on of the race to the White House, there was a fellow member making points of the way the FDA has really let the ball drop when it comes to the health of the American population. Then another member had stated that cancer wouldn't be such a widespread killer if people could learn to stop eating poison and that reminded me, of course, of all the fast food drive-thrus there are in great abundance no matter where you go...and then I thought of that title given to them; "Cancer Stations". Is that something Dirk coined? Because I can vaguely recall that I've heard that term a long, long time ago and could it possibly be more of a term as in 'Dive' or 'If the food don't kill you, the service will', kinda thing?

I believe when Dirk refers to the term 'Cancer Station' he is referring to fast food joints where all the food is loaded with fat, salt and sugar and everything that contributes to bad health, but that's what I gather. I'm not sure if Dirk invented the term or if it's something he heard and thought it a perfect description of fast food resturants. I mean it's not that important to know where the term actually came from but if anyone knows...it would be interesting as trivia. The political stuff still rages on but at the moment I'm wondering where that term comes from.

Hi Nacky,

I know what you mean, because I thought so too. I have been racking my brain, but I just cannot remember :mad:reading or hearing this (perhaps in an old interview or article with Dirk?).
However, we'll keep on searching ...

I could have sworn I've heard someone else refer Fast Food chains as 'Cancer Stations' a long time ago...but it's hard to recall and that I only remember thinking it was funny enough of a name, you know? It's a trivial question, I know, but I wondered on that.

I think he actually did. I'm not 100% sure.
I'll look in my copy of Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy and And Then We Went Fishing. ;)

Yes, please, because I'd like to know LOL! Really he's right, though...they are Cancer Stations and too many people don't eat right and there's sickness and disease because of that crap "replica food" (I coined that one - I call shotgun!) :p

Besides "cancer stations" , the Dutch consumer organisation will publish an article in one of their October magazins regarding the calorie intake of socalled 'double portions' of fast food. They found that these large servings give you a calorie intake that is sometimes THREE TIMES as high as a normal meal !!

Here is a (free) translation of part of this news flash.
Absurd

The Consumentenbond: "From our tests it appears that these portions contain an absurd amount of calories, sometimes two to three times more than a normal dinner".

Fully Loaded
The biggest caloriebom is the Fully Loaded Box from Kentucky Fried Chicken, with 1581 kilocalorieën per portion. The Zinger Box from the same food chain is runner up with 1468 calorieën. Next is Burger King with the Hot Texas Double Whopper menu (1433 calorieën); the same menu but then without the 'Double' is in fourth place with 1207 calorieën. The 'discount menu extra' from McDonald's contains 935 calorieën.

Isn´t this dreadful? I think by now everyone knows fastfood is fattening but this is ridiculous.

A morbid thought: in this way you will never develop cancer from fastfood, because you will already have died from obesity related diseases like heart failure, high blood pressure and strokes ... :(

Hi Ladies !...and Gents...if you're reading...

Yes, it IS dradful ! And scary !! I believe there's a small percentage of the public that have chosen to eat more healthy. But there's still a huge percent that only "looks at" the $$$ and time they feel they're saving with these "fast meals"...forgetting / or not wanting to hear about the health problems eating this way will most likely cause !! :o

This week the company I work for started a new concept with our insurances ( of which we had to renew or in some cases...start / new hires )...anyway...what they offered was a $500 "discount" on our medical premiums ( and yes, like pretty much every where else...our premiums went up somewhat ! ). All we had to do in order to get this discount ( which went "ontop" of our premiums that were already raised if we choose not to do... ) was to fill out an online survey regarding our present health and our choosing a more healthier way of eating and living...that's it ! They offered...for free...help with choosing the right / more healthy foods and exercise, etc. to be more healthy ! Abit cool ...right !?....well you WOULD NOT BELIEVE the grumbles and moans from some of my co-workers !!! :o

Hi Christie,

It is really unbelievable! People really need to be re-educated on food and health and possible consequences. But it is a good initiative of your company. After all, one has to start somewhere and perhaps this sort of social pressure/reward thing might just push a few more on the road to healthier (or at least a less unhealthy) way of living. :D

Although, sorry the premiums went up again ... By the way I know the feeling, health insurance over here is getting more expensive by the year as well. :(
