Trying to remember movie title

Almost a decade ago I was in summer school for English, and the teacher showed us a movie staring Mr. Benedict. Try as I might I can't seem to find the notes on it that I took, nor can I find a description that seems familiar with what I remember of it on the interwebs.

Here is what I do remember about it; Mr. Benedict played the part of a younger man (possibly a hippy) who gets drafted into the military, teaches the other recruits some tricks to make boot camp easier, and goes AWOL at the end of the movie. Any help that y'all can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

The plot doesn't sound familiar to anything I've seen Dirk in. Are you sure you have the right actor? Can you remember who else was in the film? That might help narrow it down a bit also :)

To answer your questions, (1) no I'm not sure that I have the right actor (thought if my memories correct and I don't then the main actor could be Mr. Benedict's twin brother.) and (2) at one point I probably could have named other people in the film, but like I said I'm remembering this from almost a decade ago.
