Exactly my thoughts on the whole Big Brother and "reality show" crap that fills our screens now. The first couple of series of Big Brother were okay, because they had a kind of social experiment feel about them. Nobody really knew what to expect. The contestents weren't coming on there to try and become famous in the worst possible way. It had this amazing tension, in that we were watching relationships develop and grow and break down in real time. Nobody knew what would happen tomorrow. The producers didn't try to manipulate things, they let them happen naturally.
But after that it went dowhill (oddly enough in the series Jade Goody was first in. Funny that.) And it's got worse year on year. They keep fiddling with the format, losing the pure, simple and winning idea they started out with. They manipulated the contenstants. They choose ALL gobby argumentative people, so instead of a week of straining to be polite before snapping and having the first argument, people are arguing on the first day, which is just so boring and predictable. Every wrinkle they come up with backfires horribly.
They've even messed with the sacredness of the diary room, which is the stupidest thing they could ever do. Some contestants have been absolute stars in the diary room, when they believed that was the one place they knew they could be totally honest. But the producers have broken that trust when they've let others see those conversations. (It happened in Dirk's BB.) Once the contestants don't trust the diary room they'll hold back in there and that would be a terrible shame.
The contestants are all wannabes or total freaks (or both.) It's horrific. Sure, it's sometimes compelling in a "car crash telly" way, but that doesn't mean it's in any way edifying to watch.
Dirk's BB was like torture at time. Gobsmackingly awful. I stuck with it to the end, since Dirk was there till the final night. Would I have watched it if he'd gone earlier? Well maybe, car crash telly again. And sometimes just watching it felt like "being there" for the people on the receiving end of the crap going on in there, Dirk among them of course. Which sounds silly, but that's the way I felt.
Er, right... what the heck am I doing wittering so much about a show I no longer watch?

Er, right... what the heck am I doing wittering so much about a show I no longer watch?
I think there was so much frustration about that show - even for those who only got bits and pieces of it over here - that we still need to "vent" about it a bit. It's like wanting to slam somebody's head against the way and scream, "Why don't you listen to me!!!!"
um...er...anyway... :p
Still has huge frustration now, one of this years contestants Darnell said himself that BB9 ,10 and 11, just won't be as good. For the first time this year there is a couple that have to pretend not to be a couple, and a blind housemate Mikey that have the C4 forums raging about possible humiliation he (may) suffer etc... the level of interfrence that BB is doing in itself, nobody tusts it anymore (no internet streaming either).
I loved Lutting Dirk (live update thread) and until the Goodys `came in it (CBB5) had the potentional to be a good show, but Dirk's comments are correct.
Still watch it tho 'Doh'

The only good thing about last years celebrity Big Brother was bringing Dirks genius to the attention of the British public. Not that they didn't already love him as an actor, but as himself I mean.

Just dropping by an old thread to post this from last night's (London) Evening Standard. It's about IAC (I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here), a reality show where celebrities have to tough it out in the Australian jungle, but it's got some relevance to Dirk's time on CBB, and the last line amused me! :))
"The routine has now become so familiar that participants and audience now know roughly what is going to happen before it does. ... The line-up for the new series looked promising on paper. Leaving aside the cleavage contingent and the silly boys, there were some heavyweight contenders. ... There are a couple of decorative girls. One of them is [a] footballer['s] fiancee and the other one isn't. The other one claimed not to be dumb, but the verdict is not in on that. ... There's always a slightly weird American along for the ride - just to subtly indicate how different we are to them.'
:)):))
ROFL - alas this is the recipe for hit reality tv shows in the UK at the moment! :o >:)

I havenīt seen this particular show, but I know the concept from a few Dutch shows with (Dutch) celebrities, from which a few ended quite tragic (illness, emergency surgery, host having a fatal car accident) :(. So Iīm not too keen on this subject.
Did I understand correctly, is George Takei the īAmerican weirdo` this time?! Besides being a DB fan, I must confess, I am a Trekkie. So this is really amazing!! I expect George will do nicely after Dirk ...
Although .... if I had to choose between the two of them, I would pick Dirk anytime ...;):D

Yes George Takei (Sulu from Star Trek TOS) is the 'slightly weird American' on IAC this year. :D There are 2 more new additions for the show (not been announced yet), but I'm guessing they've got their quota of Americans! :p ;)
Btw, I'm not saying I agree with what that newspaper wrote, just that it amused me when I read it! ;) Dirk's hardly 'slightly weird'. Let's face it, according to popular mainstream culture - he's wackier than Wacko Jacko! :p >:) ;)

Agreed, and brilliantly put about reality shows by Dirk.
Does anyone remember "The Monkees" ? Today that would be considered a "reality" show as they were a band manufactured by a corporation to imitate and be the american comedic / marx brothers answer to the Beatles. Even "Davy Jones" was the weird and slightly off english guy to provide a bit of color for the American audience. Most reality shows are no more real than " The Monkees" or "The Partridge Family" were real bands.

I agree! Nevertheless, I was about 10 or 12 at the time of the Monkees and I just loved those shows!! :)) (Didn't the one with the hat start his own career one day?)
But at that time, manufactured as these bands may have been, there was a script for them to follow in order to be entertaining ... in contrast with the reality spectacles of today, which to me are mostly a mix of total boredom and the Jerry Springer show. Everytime they desperately need someone wacky enough to keep it entertaining. ;) (And to think that the whole BB concept was a Dutch show idea ...... not our proudest TV moment, obviously ...)

So many of our reality shows here in the states are scripted, survivor, the real world, the hills, the girls next door ( girls of the playboy mansion) are all scripted loosely if not completely..... that's what I was getting at, I didn't realize overseas that all of the reality shows are not "scripted" to a point.... sorry...

Really? I didn't know that ... In Holland they let these kind of shows 'evolve by themselves', sort of raw cut so to speak .... not always a pretty picture, with people fighting (sometimes literally, hence my association with the Jerry Springer show), kicking and screaming. More horror than reality. Over here there was one show in which there was such a display of violence that it was discussed in Parliament whether these shows ought to be broadcasted at all or at least restricted in the future .... :o:rolleyes:
From the CBB with Dirk I only saw some clips on YT, and that got really ugly with some people a few times as well .... despite of Dirk's good nature, I might add.
No, give me the Monkees (with script) anytime, even if it's just for nostalgic reasons.. ;):D

I have the entire 'Monkees' series on DVD :D
Mike Nesmith (the one with the hat) had went on to be a video producer, setting up a company called 'Pacific Arts' in Los Angeles, California. He produced his own brainchild 'Elephant Parts' and had a few hit songs spawned from it. In the mid-1980s, Monkees reformed after 20 years since first becoming a world success with 'Last Train To Clarksville', a number of other hitsongs and, of course, their TV series.
The Monkees on Big Brother would be hysterical. There are so many episodes where the Monkees are intruded upon by all kinds of crazy people and the only thing they seemed to worry about was singing, dancing and flirting with girls. And driving that eyesore of a car.

Nacky-
You are my hero, I only have like 90% of them on old bad VHS from TV......I went to see them in 1988 (as a teen) in concert without Mike.
I think I should challenge you to a Monkees based trivia game. LOL, I thought I was the only one that had all that useless trivia floating inside my head. Did you know that Mike's mom invented white out? and then sold the patent to gillette and that is where most of his fortune came from.
Mike also sued PBS and won over a video contract that they tried to enforce that would have meant him losing a ton of money.
WOW... DB and the Monkees, what else do we all have in common... but isn't it the truth? The Monkees were like the reality TV of the 1960s, think about that one episode in season 2 where it is just them being chased by girls around and around and around, and the pop guns.... That is so entertaining... way better than new reality TV. Or like you said... all the wacky people that came in and out every episode.... hilarious....
Love it Cheers Hope Faith and Lots of Love

I think everyone had a crush on Davy Jones, but I liked Mike Nesmith...not really in a romantic way but he was a no-nonsense kinda guy. I really like Peter Tork, too. He has such a sweet personality. Mickey Dolenz is a goofball, the curly one comes off like a Robin Williams (the comedian not the singer), always so full of energy and gusto. He also sang most of their hits. Today he's a director and does lots of other things.
I was like 2-3 years old when they were originally on the air, so I didn't get into the Monkees until their 1980s revival and then I was hooked from then on. Oh and you're right, Mike's mother was a secretary who invented White Out or Liquid Paper and made lots of money from that. On top of that Monkee money to boot. Nesmith wasn't with the other 3 during the revival because of his commitments with his company but he did rejoin the boys in the mid 1990s and they even televised a Monkees special/episode or something. In the episode there were kids trying to get in to see them play. The kids toilet-papered their front yard. The Monkees thought it was cute.

One of my favorite Mike songs is "What am I Doing Hangin' Round" he has more of a country / pop vibe than the others.... Mostly because that song mentions San Antonio.
Peter's leads are more folk / rock "Shades of Gray"
And Mickey had almost all the lead vocals on the big ones

Wow! :o You both know so much about them!! Great, it absolutely took me back Memory Lane .... As I am a bit (quite a lot, actually) older than you two I do remember their songs very vividly as well as their shows at the time, but as they were mostly in the States we didn't have as much news of them over here. I can't remember them ever coming over to Europe, but then again I would have been too young to go to a concert anyway.

I wasn't born yet when the monkees were around either... only for the 20th anniversary reunion that they did.... They actually had a single that charted in the US in 1987 top 10... so you were alive for one of their singles.
That Paris episode is the one where the girls chase them around... so classic. I think we can somehow watch episodes of the a team for free online in the US. I did it once... it's no longer on re-runs in cable right now at least not in the US.
