Enough said. Dirk is the only Starbuck. If DeSanto had been given the go ahead we would have see the lovable rogue at the beginning of the mini smoking his famous stoggie.

I agree. The part was written *for* a man to be played *by* a man.
I can't envision anyone else playing the role and it's a total shame DeSanto's version didn't get a chance, and for Dirk to explore Starbuck 25 years later. :(

Yes, Dirk will be the only Starbuck in my heart,,, I like the fact that they've got BG back, but it's just not the same without Dirk,,,, He will always be the "Starbuck" of my dreams

I was wondering if I would like the Starbuck charachter as a female. And I think I am liking it. It's a whole new story, a whole new world, with some similarties with the old world.
She is rough and tough and I think she does a good job of playing Starbuck as a female. :)
Why not?

Hi all!!
If you all will forgive my over-the-top analogy, I feel like the gender change was a gimmick, an unnecesary and purposely agitating attempt to gain a bigger slice of the TV rumor spotlight.
Kinda like casting a woman in the part of Jesus (in some future Easter mini), just to stir people up. It's not that a female is not just as capable as a man in the Thespian arena; there are simply better choices for given roles, peformers that fit a given performance.
To me there is, was and will always be only ONE Starbuck. You simply cannot recast perfection. ;)
Fondly,

Well...., it doesn't really matter to me wether Starbuck is played by a man or woman but i just think it's strange to have a 'new' Starbuck ! It's Dirk , or no one else. They just should have givin the new female character another name.

I was happy to see the fun exchange between Dirk and the actress (Katee Sackhoff) portraying the new embodiment of "Starbuck" on the DVD release of the New Battlestar movie that began the new show. I know it can't be easy for him to see his character change, and shift into a new place with this new show, but with as timeless as BSG is, it's hard for me to not have seen them do a remake and change characters that have become American and World Icons. I think it was kind of Katee to say "Your the ONLY Starbuck as you were. You are forever your character, noone can redo what you have done, or even come close." Something like that.
I am happy to see a smarter, well made scifi show that isn't a remake of Star Trek, or another Star Wars movie or cartoon. This show is visualy lovely, the story is harder, colder and more in depth. For the times we live in now, it puts you into a perspective that we understand, and appeals to our sense of reality. I like it, just as much as I love the original Battlestar.
You can't replace one show over the other, and you honestly in my own opinion compare them! I can't, and I try not to, because I love them on two different levels, and the characters on two different levels.
It's kinda this concept, if you'll take it, that some folks LOVE Star Wars the classic movies, and nothing else, no books, no new movies, no new characters. Some love just the new movies, no classic SW, no books, etc. And some folks love it both. I love it both, because it allows me MORE of something I enjoy, instead of less of it. :)
So I love both versions, because it gives ME a sense of personal styles, and creative ideas between two sets of a very gift actors, and creators. :) We should be so lucky we have lived in a time when we are getting the chance to see both interpretations. :)

The new Starbuck had to be a woman, no man could have lived under Dirk's shadow. This way she can be different but still be the best of the new warriors.

The new show is a travesty to the name Battlestar Galactica. It cheapens and degrades the principles the classic stood for. Baltar is a spineless wuss who is easily manipulated by sex and the Cylons have all been replaced with human looking things because theyre too cheap to make new costumes. Its nothing but angst angst angst and dysfunctional characters at each others throats. The Cylons wont have to do a thing. The humans will kill each other off
I cannot support it in good conscience. It would be like befriending that which isults and puts down your older friend. As a Dirk fan I am obligated to not like Sackoff because she is making a mockery of a role HE made famous. Its like what Uma Thurman said in Pulp Fiction about Elvis and the Beatles.

Hi, I am new in this forum and want to say hello to all!
I am a great fan of Dirk and the Starbuck character he played. Dirk always will be the one and only Starbuck for me!!!
edit: And, to hell, I donīt know, why they are changing so many male characters to females in the new series? Boomer is a female, and Commander Caine will become a female too (played by Michelle Forbes), I heard! I like to see Michelle Forbes again, because I liked her on Star Trek TNG, but Caine a female?...I donīt know...
