Hullo :)

I met Dirk last year at Collectormania 6 in Milton Keynes, UK, and was pleased to discover what an absolute gentleman he is. I didn't know too much about him until the event, where I was fortunate to be placed working with him.

He kept me entertained all day!

So, have any of you guys met him?

luv me x x x

No born I wasn't although I heard that con was enormous! I've only ever done one convention in my life, Galacticon 25th anniversary in late 2003. That was fun :)

oh excellent!

yea it was pretty huge, it gave collectormania 4 some competition, that had Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin at.

I've done a few conventions, mainly because I crew for them, and are quite easy for me to get too.

Where do you live? :)

Actually no which is a bit strange as we've had a few movies made close to where I live. One was filmed about 10 minutes away in fact.
Harrison Ford did some filming for his "K-19 The Widowmaker" not far from here and Jane Seymour and James Brolin did a film about an hour away. If you've seen the latest Richard Gere flick "Shall We Dance" it was filmed entirely on location about an hour away from me :)

thats really cool. i dont really have movie sets near me. a few scenes from harry potter was shot about an hour ago, last year. i have a few tv studios nearby too. but what with college and work, its hard to find the time to go star-spotting :P

Hello, I met Dirk at Collectormania last year as well. Brought a camcorder and got his assistant to hold it - she did well, got a good picture!

I'd met him in February as well in London at the MVC store when he did a signing for the Battlestar Gallactica videos. We all got a couple of minutes chat with him and he told me how they filmed a certain part in the film "Alaska".

This time I showed him a magazine I had kept from the late 80s with an Ateam article in it.
He said "I wish I had time to read this," so I offered to scan the pages and send them to his website. He replied "Ok, yeah, do that!" I don't know if he every received the scans, but it was great to have spent a few minutes talking to my childhood hero.

You're right, he's a great guy. My Dad saw the footage I took and even though he never really followed the ATeam he said he could tell Dirk was obviously good natured, not some arrogant, er... whatever.

I asked Dirk how to pronounce his birth surname then told him "I've never had Eggs Benedict before." he replied "Oh, you know too much!"

Dirk was there signing on all 3 days of the convention -it must have been tiring for him in the end.

I look forward to hearing more about Dirk in the near future

James ~

good to hear you've had a good experience both with Dirk and at Collectormania.

he was a lovely guy. i'm not sure if i was the assistant that filmed for you, i was working with him all day friday of the event.

I never really followed him until I'd met him, but the guy just made such an impression that i set about finding out more as soon as i could.

At Collectormania, Dirk worked long after most guests, and on friday he didn't take a lunch break.

nice talking to you x x x

Hello Borntoolate,

Yes, if you were assisting Dirk all day Friday then you were the one I gave my camera to. Thanks to you my family now have pictures of one of my happiest moments (sorry to sound mushy there, but seriously I owe you!).
You did just right getting the handshake in the picture as well!

I work a 4 day week in my day job (I work as a typeface setter) so I thought I'd better get there earily on Friday while I had the free time to beat the big crowds you'd get on a Saturday.

I realised I was only going to get a few minutes with Dirk so I wrote him a letter and gave it to him in his hand in case I didn't get to say what I wanted to say to him. He picked it up and shook the envelope asking "What's this?" I just said "A letter for you". I didn't tell him I'd...shall we say included one of my website design business cards inside - the letter had "P.S. Sorry if that's a little inappropriate!" Although really it was just so he had my contact details in the 0.000000005% chance he might email me one day, rather than using him for my financial gain. I know with the amount of people he meets it's very unlikely.

When I showed Dirk the magazine (it was "Lookin") you said it was "really old", so you obviously recongised it! How did you get to work at Collectormania, or get chosen to assist Dirk? Sorry if you've answered that question a thousand times, but I'd like to hear about it. You can email me off group at james.mccarty@btopenworld.com - don't want to dominate Dirk's forum.

Thank you for responding
All the best

I met Dirk back in July 1980!! In a small South Carolina town - Walterboro - when he was here with Terri Nunn (of Berlin) and Tanya Tucker filming "Georgia Peaches" AKA "Eat My Smoak" - - a real stinker of a movie but when you're totally in love with Dirk you didn't care!!!!! I was just a very young girl but I remember that day like it was yesterday!!
Matter of fact, I had a dream last night about DIrk which is what brought me to this site.
Trust me, I could tell you all kinds of stories about what 12 year old girls think of Dirk!!!
If only you guys could read my journals from back then you'd flip. Dirk's buddy, Richard Hatch, is a frequent visitor to this lovely little town....last time he was here he taught a class in which my bestfriends' 12 year old son attended....unbeknownest to him who Richard was.
Still lovin' ya Dirk after all these years.

"...and i really would like to know when george and roland were born?"

So, you won't be able to sleep tonight if you don't get an answer, huh?:-P Actually, half of that answer is in "And then we went fishing". George was born Feb, 28th 1988 ( I remember that personally because *I* was born in Feburary and my sister graduated high school in 1988...it was the same year we lost my papaw too. So that year really stands out to me.). I would have to guess that Roland was born somewhere in 1990 - considering those boys are only a few years apart. ( ...and *I* was the one who graduated *that* year....but like I said, I'm speculating on that one.).

Happy reading.:-)

Hi there!

So Janet , how was it for you?? I also went to that convention and it was so wonderful to meet Dirk. It was great to see all my heroes of Battlestar Galactica and finally , after 23 years, meet my favorite!!! When i was 10 BG was my whole world and ofcourse i was madly in love with Starbuck (and never got over it... ). I was also a fan of the Ateam a few years later but i still have the warmest memories of BG. And now was my chance to finally meet da man!! And boy , i did not get dissapointed! I've posted this elsewhere but i cannot resist posting it here also.

Anyway....... he was soooooooooo incredibly nice. He still has that charm and i was soooooo nervous at first for looking my youth-hero in his eyes. What can i say he still sweeps me of my feet! I told him what he meant to me in those days and asked some questions about some BG episodes and in the meantime he had put his signature on Starbucks picture for me saying : To Martine , it is so wonderful to be part of your life! Is that sweet or what!!? A picture with him was no problem and we kept on chatting during that and he even showed me photos of his sons and his (beautiful wooden) house ! I wished i could chat with him for hours, there is still so much i wanted to talk about and well.....he held me so firmly that i even could not get away if i had wanted to( wich i didn't ofcourse, you can see it in the picture) and said while joking : i don't want to let you go , i'm gonna steel you away! Enought to make me blush , he such a flirt! But than it ended because he had to go back to work signing more autograps. So it was wonderfull , it was yesterday and i am still smiling! He does make you feel special.

I have some pics taken at the event , you can see them here (if it works , i hope so!) :

There are some pics of him on stage during the Q&A also. Both BG and Ateam shows were great because the actors were so nice and funny. Dirk and Dwight Schultz were so funny it almost was stand-up comedy , i laughed out loud so many times! As you can imagine if you see the pics of him lying on the floor... I can go on and on but don't worry i won't....!

Dirk you are such a nice man , YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!!!

Hi Martine, I recently saw Dirk at Gatecon in Vancouver. He is still as handsome as ever. He was always my idol growing up and I loved speaking with him. I wish I could have been there to listen to him with Dwight. He signed my copy of fishing and I had my picture taken with him. I am feeling very jealous you got to see pictures of his sons and home (lol ) I have been to Bigfork Montana it is beautiful. I should stop now but you and I are in full agreement Dirk is an amazing man.
