I have a question about brown rice. Can you use converted rice in a macrobiotic diet? I have tried brown rice and either I'm not cooking it right or something but it doesn't taste very good. Are you supposed to wash it before you cook it? I've have heard both yes and no. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tracy. I really need to invest in a pressure cooker. I've been steaming everything and my brow rice either came out too done or not done enough. Is it supposed to be a little crunchy?

If your rice is crunchy that means you haven't cooked it long enough. The grain should be tender. If your steaming it, add a little more water and steam longer.
I boil mine and it usually takes at least 45 minutes until the grain is cooked without overcooking it :)

One thing I do, which is a great time saver, if if you soak the rice first it cuts the cooking time in like 1/2. IN the morning, put a cup of rice in 2 cups of water and then leave it. When you come home, put it on to boil and it takes like 20 minutes and it will be perfect!
It's not really macro, because it uses electricity but buy a rice cooker, they're fairly cheap and the rice will be cooked everytime.

There is quite a bit of debate about the proper preparation of brown rice within the macrobiotic community. This comes on the heels of the recent passing of key members of the macrobiotic community who worked and saved the lives of so many. Cecile Levin (who was a friend) and Michio Kushi's wife Aveline both passed away from cancer. Pressure cooking has been called into question, both for too "yangizing" rice as well as causing problems in the digestive tract which prevent full absorbtion and movement of food through the tract. More boiled rice, as well as mixing in occasional white rice to provide variety is recommended.
Bottom line, trust your instincts and guage by your internal sensors if the structure of your diet is working for you. There are no rigid rules.
