If you ever get the chance to meet the man in person please do so.....it will be worth it just to spend any amount of time with him....he is a wonderful man and sincerly enjoys the life he lives
My husband & I recently got to meet him at a convention and we can both say we love and admire him even more
.....his books have changed our lives and his commitment to family and to keeping his priorities straight are to be admired.....he told us all his hollywood friends just did not understand but he knew he was doing the right thing....we agree he did....yes it would have been great for all his fans to have had him around but his kids needed him more and he has no regrets about his decision
I will be working with MsSpooky & Tracy to include a complete report of things he past on soon and photos (if you want to see at least one-more if you have a myspace account can been seen by contacting me in PM. I will send you a link.
.....for now I leave you with a few tidbits: you will be seeing Earthstorm soon and things look good for seeing Goldene Zeiten as well

Donna, those pics are so cute! I look forward for Earthstorm if I catch it...hope I do *crosses fingers* I've read a little bit about it and it looks good. MySpace is great, ain't it? There're lots of things you can do with it, like styles and backgrounds and stuff. I haven't been that active online much (although I just added a very cool Moon module on my stuff and running a ghost story list series over at my group) but I've been out enjoying life, swimming, sunshine and reading. I mean REALLY enjoying life. Reading Stephen King's "Cell", Bruce Campbell's book "If Chins Could Kill" etc. Unfortunately I don't have Dirk's books...my bad. :P
You know, I have read the forward to Dirk's Kamikaze book that someone posted once...it was so good that I actually looked for it and didn't find it so maybe I'll break down and order a copy!

My Day With Mr. Dirk Benedict
By
Donna Reddick
Dirk arrived looking energetic and excited to start the day. He was dressed in a casual black button down shirt and jeans. His only jewelry is a simple digital watch and what appears to be a class ring worn on his right hand. He looked very fit and tan and looks nowhere near his age of 61. It is true you are what you eat, he eats healthy and it shows.
Once he establishes where he will sit for the day so he can be the most accessible to his fans he is ready to begin greeting people that are starting to line up to meet him.
He is the type of celebrity that greets each and every fan by looking them directly in the eyes and leading them into conversation. He is very passionate about what each fan asks and why they are there. He makes each and every visitor feel like an invited guest into his world if even for only a moment.
He has stacks of 8x10 glossies each with a different picture of himself at various times in his life and even has one with the members of the A-Team. Behind him is a huge poster of him as Starbuck. One look at him you see the twinkle in the eye and the unmistakable smile of a mixture of Starbuck/Face and the man that brought both characters to life.
His quick wit and charm puts each “guest” instantly at ease. He is most fun to watch when he is interacting with children. It shows how much he respects family and is willing to spend time talking to the kids as well as their parents. This no doubt makes a wonderful impression on the kids meeting him.
One young man of about 6 years of age was with his parents. After the adults talked, Dirk turned his attention to the child. Dirk had been told by the parents that the child had just started watching the A-Team. Dirk took plenty of time to talk to the little guy about the show. The look on his little face reflected that he just met the man to match the hero in The Face Man character Dirk created. It was a joy to watch the exchange as the child realized this was the same man. He happily left the table proudly holding his newly signed picture.
Dirk comes alive as he carefully looks over every item he is asked to sign. An old poster from the Battlestar Galactica days caught his attention. The owner had folded it so it would be easier for him to autograph. But dirk had never seen the poster before and wanted to really see it. So he took the time to look it over very carefully. He delighted his new “guest” by looking at it for so long and asking about it. The autograph seeker left with a huge smile no doubt pleased that he had pleased Dirk by sharing a treasure from Dirk’s own past.
I too had the same feeling when I brought up my copies of his 2 books. He was very surprised at my having a copy of “And Then We Went Fishing” and sat down with it to look it over, thumbing thru the pages like he had never seen them before. He said he gets very happy when he hears people have read his books. He seems shocked that people want to but he also tells everyone that they should. It is funny how it shocks him that people care about the things he has to say. He truly has a humble spirit and does not seem to be fully aware of how much people love and respect him.
I came back to his area several times throughout the day to observe him interacting with his “guests” and not once did I see him appear to be bored or distracted from making each and every “guest” feel that they were just that, a welcomed “guest”.
I walked thru the convention and witnessed many celebrities interacting and checking out the size of their crowd. A few drew larger crowds and a few drew smaller ones, but, Dirk stood out as one of only a few celebrities that appeared to be genuinely happy about being there. The days at conventions can be long and demanding on everyone. To sit from 10-6 for 3 days straight would take a toll on anyone. I was there on day 2 and spoke with Dirk before the show began, in the middle of the show, and towards the end of the day. Dirk was going just as strong at the end of the day as he was in the beginning.
For proof of this stroll over to the pics on myspace. The one of just me & him was taken early in the day and the one with me, him & my husband was taken at the end of the day.
And now for a few things he shared and I now share them with you:
He had a busy week. It started with a call about the movie Earthstorm. It seems they needed him to come to LA do to some loops for the film. He told me he was very surprised as he thought the movie had already been shown. It was scheduled for June. He told us to look for the movie by looking up Stephen Baldwin, as he is in the movie. It was as though looking him up to find the movie would not be enough. I told him that he is listed very high in the cast list for the movie and he just laughed and raised an eyebrow. He really does not think he is that important. You can find more on the movie at imdb.com and you too will see he is listed as second in the cast.
So he started off in LA at the beginning of the week and was in Chicago for the end. He said he was sure he lost 5 pounds running around so much and so little time to eat. Of course that meant I had to bring him some miso soup for lunch...hey I had to do my part...I told him it was just the mom in me. He smiled, thanked me and proceeded to wolf it down. He offered the remaining sea weeds/vegetables at the bottom of the cup to a fan in line but they “politely” refused it.
Dirk speaks freely and proudly about his choice to leave LA and raise his sons in Montana. He said all his Hollywood friends thought he was crazy for doing so but he knows he did the right thing and has no regrets about it. He seems to appreciate it when he is told he did do the right thing. The confidence in his convictions and the choices that led him to walk away from a career, show a man that is truly humble and accepting of the consequences of his actions even if his friends do not understand.
About leaving LA, he told me he knew it was for a specific period of his life and now that they are older he is able to move to other things. He said he is excited about this new phase of his life. He told me “I did what I had to do” and he did so without regret or apologies to anyone. We talked briefly about family and our responsibilities to them. We laughed and shared our mutual experiences of others not understanding our putting family first. We agreed and confirmed with each other that the years spent raising kids was well worth all the sacrifices.
We next brought up the subject of the movie Goldene Zeiten. I asked if we will ever see the movie here in the USA and he smiled and told me that he himself had just finished typing out the translation for the movie. He moved his hands across the table imitating typing. He hopes that will allow the movie to be seen by his American fans. He was very proud of the fact that he personally did the typing.
Later in the day he was talking to a group of us about his feelings on Starbuck being a woman. He said it makes him happy. I joked by saying “right!”, and he looked me right in the eye and said, “No really I am”. Let’s not start up the often heated debate on this one, but, I thought you would want to know that he accepts and even enjoys the fact that Starbuck is now a woman.
Dirk benedict is a very happy man that has tasted success in all he has set out to do in his life be it an actor, author, father of just a man on a journey thru life. He is very comfortable and pleased with his life and seems to look forward to what is next without being consumed by trying to be something or someone else.
So for those of you wondering what he writes in an autograph, he tries to personalize each one for the person asking for it. He includes the date and signature of course. He was often seen writing “*$!”. What it means I guess only Dirk knows. In my copy of “The Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy” he put “Dear Donna and Larry, Keep studying, keep cooking, and chew, chew, chew! So I pass that on to each of you as well.

Way to go Donna! I was happy to read how Dirk was energetic and smiling! Lately I've been like that alot! Dirk is going strong and I find it promising that he hasn't stopped meeting with the public and doing cons and the like. He's really a living example of not letting anything negative get you down and your pics show his inner and outer energy and you and your husband look great as well!
*applause* :D

Well done/written Donna! I second the *applause* for you. :D Dirk does look very relaxed in your pics as well as your husband and yourself (you two do look great too). And reading about how he puts his "guests" at ease (I've heard/read that alot from those that met him at a con). I'm a little shy  ... and most likely wouldn't be able to approach him....however, after reading your report...I believe I could! 8) Hopefully in 2007 (that is if he has any cons in the USA...) I'll get the chance to have him sign my copy of "Confessions"!...*keeping my fingers crossed* Thanks for the "info" on Earthstorm and Goldene Zeiten (and that he personally did the typing for the translation of the movie-GZ..."just for us" to hopefully be able to see it...THANKS DIRK!!!). And although I may not have children of my own (I do have 3 wonderful nieces) I do have the utmost respect for Dirk and *applaud* him for putting his family first!
I couldn't make it to the con but with your report and pics it's the next best thing to acutally being there...Thanks sooo very much, Donna!
Warmest Regards To All,
Sincerely,
Christy

When it gets too hot outside, I check my emails and myspace, and my groups and getting that ghost story typed up. Long slow process as I don't have a scanner but I don't think you can get text from a scan. If you can, I'd like to know because Sherrie has a scanner, so does my mom. The pool was undergoing repairs for the last two weeks so it's pumping the water just right and the lot of us are ready to jump back in to avoid those triple digits in the heat index. I'm getting tan! I mean I'm friggin' tan! Looking good, keeping in shape and getting re-addicted N64's Majora's Mask, when I have the time. Been working a little too hard but life is good, maybe not so short, but good nonetheless.
I hope you're doing well, Donna! Have a GREAT weekend and I'll see you poolside!

Hey, Nacky,
You can get text from a document scan - you need OCR software (Optical Character Recognition). Some scanners come with it. My Epson did.
Yeah, I'm spending all my limited free time in the pool in my back yard. it's so warm, it's like bathwater, but it still feels great.

I know what you mean, I dive right in because there's no such thing as cold water when the sun beats down on everything! Thanks for the tip about scanning, I'll check into that. I'm sharing a story that takes place in the winter and so far I'm typing it all by hand so that takes up pretty much alot of time. Other than that, just catching up on back messages, having fun reading about Dirk's signing tables, etc. Hee hee hee! You know I've only ever been to record collectors cons and stuff but Donna makes me wanna go to a sci-fi one. Wasn't there one in Chicago? August 3-6 more than a few weeks ago?

yes the Chicago con was the one we went to...it was our first time to a Sci Fi con as well...I work in the music industry and the only cons I get to go to are music related...this was a nice change of pace for us....
I hope you get the scanner thing worked out....it is great but watch for certain words or strings of words to not quite "translate" the way they should...but it will save you lots of time
take care all and enjoy your weekends....I have no pool to jump in.... but then again.....well.....for me......... I prefer to jump in "SNOW!!!!" .....and there is none of that here either....just heat and humidity!!!!! :(

Hi Susanne! Nice to meet you, and welcome! :)
Don't be too sure about never being able to meet Dirk in Australia. I believe he's done conventions there (and no doubt would if he was asked and there was no schedule conflicts).
I hope you do get to meet him - if you do, please see if you can give him a hug for me.

YOU ARE SO LUCKY!
I wrote him last year awhile back.
I hope that he received the letters, at least they weren't sent back to me.
There's some hope!
I realize that he's very, very busy, with all his travelling and appearances etc.
I am crossing my fingers, that I'll get a response soon.
It would be a real honour and a sincere pleasure to meet him.
I live in Canada in Owen Sound, Ontario.
It's quite beautiful here.
They've filmed quite a few Hollywood movies up here.
Any chance that Dirk might be coming to Ontario, Canada?
I sure hope so!
take care,
Anne
