"Prescription: Murder" and "The A-Team"

Dirk has just announced to this website that he has two projects in the works beginning with a cameo appearance in the new "The A-Team" film, which is currently shooting in Vancouver Canada. The film stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, and Jessica Biel. For cast list and information on this 2010 theatrical release visit the Internet Movie Database for details:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/

Dirk's original co-star Dwight Schultz has already confirmed a cameo as well.

Also, beginning in the Spring of '10,, Dirk will be starring in a three month run of the Broadway play "Prescription: Murder" for the Middleground Theatre Company in the UK. The play, written in 1962 starred Thomas Mitchell and Joseph Cotten and later became the "pilot" for the TV series "Columbo" starring Peter Falk.
Dirk will play "Columbo."
Go to www.middlegroundtheatre.co.uk (http://www.middlegroundtheatre.co.uk) for info on tour Theatre Company doing the tour, or visit the plays official website for play details.

Wow, great news, Tracy! Not that I'm too fond of the whole 'new A-Team' idea in general, because for me the guys are just not replaceable, but it's nice that not only Dwight gets his cameo appearance in the new film. Now I'm wondering if Mr. T will be in it, too?

And Dirk back on stage is great! Oh, I would love to see that, but the UK is a bit far to hop over for a night at the theatre. All the best, Dirk, you will be a great Columbo, right down to the cigar :)

Dirk as Columbo? Now that's an interesting stretch! Used to hang out at a couple Colombo sites early on, doing the usual photo thing. Peter Falk was a character. Always cracked me up that later on in the show, Carolyn Jones played a character named... ready? Rita Ratcliffe. Always wondered about that one. I know Falk appreciated the pix, but? Still have the script.

Ought to be interesting to see how Dirk plays it... all rumpled and disingenuous or very clever. Even at his clowning best, he seems too smart to appear like the rumpled Columbo.

Any chance this play will hit the US?? Now THAT would be a fun trip to take! Get a buncha peeps together and go see it. Really something to look forward to!

Anywhere near Southern England?!

My suggestion would be to join the theater company's mailing list via the Columbo play's website:

www.columbo-prescription-murder.com (http://www.columbo-prescription-murder.com)

That way you can keep track of news, tour dates and locations when they're announced :)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! I've just booked tickets for the show in Cardiff. It's going to be a slightly early birthday present. I'm finding it a bit surreal. Is Dirk really going to be on stage in my capital? The theatre I pass everytime I go shopping in Cardiff?
Anyone else booked tickets yet?

Not for the show overall, but I loved this part:

Dirk was definitely the glue just about holding this play together. A brilliant portrayal of the Peter Falk’s Columbo role during the 70’s that we are most familiar with. Diction, body language and facial expressions were performed with confidence and authenticity.

Well, I saw the 2nd night last night and I think it went very well!

Dirk, ofcourse, put in a stellar performance and I didn't think the rest of the cast were as bad as the review! In fact, I thought they all did very well. I only noticed one awkward moment when it seemed as if someone may have forgotten their line but I'm sure they're still settling into their characters and things will only get better as the tour goes on. I thought Dirk caught the essence of Columbo's character really well, with just enough of the Peter Falk neuances to keep him recognisable but in his own style. It was funny that Dirk had to mess his hair up to complete the scruffy look, particularly when he made it extra messy for the scene where he had reportedly been up all night! I loved that fact that it fell back into place after he ran his fingers through it a few times to get it back off his face, as he does! My only criticism of the play was the time changing scenes, since it took so long you completely lost the pace and athmosphere the cast had created. However, I think it was a credit to them that I felt they kept managing to bring you back each time and I'm sure this may get quicker as the tour continues. The sets were amazing and looked really good. Dirk also looked good, as always, even in his oversized, crumpled, brown suit and rain coat with messy hair!

I may try and catch another performace or 2 later in the tour as I think it will be interesting to see how things change and develop as the tour progresses.

Hooked on the A-Team for ages but since I can't see him on stage I've been trying to get acquainted with some of Dirk's other works lately. Recently got to see Ruckus which has an A-Team feel, so I liked it. Today finished watching a copy of Blue Tornado. Of his work that I've seen this one is very good. I didn't think I would like it for subject matter, glad to be wrong on that count. Now to scour the internet for the next installment! :-)

Thankyou Ostarella and Christy! The interview says he may not do any more acting so it's just as well I went to see Columbo on Friday night the 27th of March!
The theatre seemed pretty full with a mixture of different age groups, then the play started and I thought the woman who played Claire hammed it up a bit too much but otherwise everyone else and obviously Dirk, was very good.
In the Wales Online interview Dirk says he never saw Columbo itself which is remarkable considering he was a very authentic Columbo... when he came on stage everyone went "Oooh!"
There were times when the curtain had to come down for a few minutes and the set was being changed around but all in all it was a very good performance injected with some humour courtsey of Dirk again! I do recommend people go if they have the chance; at the end of the performance when the actors bow to the audience Dirk got such a rapturous
applause so that was one performance that went down very well!

Dang! Another one "not available" over here :cry::cry:

What! Oh no! I did put it on the DB fan page on FB as well! It was a very good interview and they asked him intelligent questions for a change and it was quite a long interview which was nice!
Basically they talked about the A-Team a little as well as mentioning the movie briefly, then Dirk talked about quitting acting and what he was going to do next; another book was mentioned and he talked about his sons a little, one is apparently considering going into acting. He spoke about Wales' strict no smoking laws and lamented about that and I'm trying to think what else was mentioned...
I wouldn't mind going to see Columbo again when it comes to Dorset actually as that will be when the play has nearly finished it's run and it will be intesting to see how it's developed from when I saw it at Worthing.

So far I've only seen one negative review - and that was from someone who didn't think anybody but Peter Falk could play Columbo :p

starlight
04-03-2010, 02:35 AM
Went to see Dirk last night. The show was brilliant. I have no idea what that one negative review was all about.
I didn't get to meet Dirk. Please don't think I'm having a go at Dirk, far from it. He was at the theatres bar and didn't want to do the stage door that night. I completely respect his wishes. What I don't like is a member of staff, I don't know if she was Dirk's assistant or what, coming to the stage door telling us he's not feeling very well so he's already left. He was knackered. That line (already left) treats us at the stage door like idiots. If the fans waiting can't respect the wishes of an actor that he or she wants some quiet time, then they are the ones with a serious problem. I have friends who are actors, whilst they have never had to use that line I have heard it about some of their fellow cast members. I have heard theatre staff say that line and it always got to me.
Everyone left after we were told that. I stayed because I was waiting to be picked up. One woman stayed saying he's at the bar and hasn't left and was going to wait for him. Our group asked me if I wanted to stay. I said no because Dirk doesn't want to be disturbed and if I stayed I would be disrespecting him. Later, I thought I should've stayed because I didn't like the idea of that woman standing by herself at the stage door 'til I don't know what time in the night.
I'm upset I didn't get to meet Dirk because I don't think I ever will. I know I am incredibly lucky to get to see him perform. I'm just a little jealous of the other even luckier people who got to meet him the previous nights. I'm kicking myself for choosing this night to go on when I could've gone to any evening performance. Dirk gave out some pre signed flyers which I thought was nice.
My review of the show. Apart from the wife, I thought the entire cast were good. Dirk was perfect as Columbo. I know how many people have already said that but go see the show to see how perfect he is. His mannerisms were consistant and spot on. I was in complete awe when he took to the stage. I agree with the length of time it took to do the set changes. They were a tad bit long but the first change felt like forever. That's because that change had the most pieces to set up but they're not too bad from then on. I don't want to give too much away to spoil the show. But if anyone asks then I will tell. ;)

Well, got to see it on Tuesday, and bumped into Elaine too, LOL!
Nice venue, just opp Windsor Castle, so had a nice stroll around there beforehand.

It was really good to see Dirk on stage, esp at the end with the bow, he and the others looked really happy (perhaps they were happy it was over! :o) Really glad he's back there, where he started. Hope he enjoys it enough to do some more. He did a lot of rep when younger, right? which was just a week of performances per play? So I don't know if he's used to doing a month or more of the same play? It certainly a different discipline to film and tv work?

I loved that pilot episode of Columbo - actually in it, there aren't so much of the Columbo 'mannerisms' that were written in for the later series, and Peter Falk looked quiet smartish for a lot of it.

Loved the wife - Suzanna from Brookie - the wife is supposed to be 'unbearable' to live with, and she was pretty good at that, so I liked her interpretation! :p

EDIT - PS Starlight - I think he often does at least one convention a year or so in the UK, well he has recently. So I'm sure you'll get another chance to meet him. :)

Greetings everyone....hope you are all well:D

I went to see Dirk in Columbo - last Saturday in Peterborough...I couldn't miss the opportunity seeing him perform live... and I can tell you...he didn't dissapoint...Dirk played the role brilliantly...even lighting up his cigar several times during the scenes added to the ambience...:)) You could certainly tell he's a top class actor...his timing...mannerism...everthing was perfect...I would love to see him perform in the West End...something I know is an ambition of his...who knows...fingers crossed:confused:
As for the set changes, I agree, perhaps they could of been a bit swifter as there were some long pauses in between the scenes...but hey...the set was quite large and there were a lot of props...It must of taken a few people to change things round everytime:confused:
I did wait in the foyer for an autograph...he must of sneaked through a side door - we all saw him walking rather quickly to an awaiting taxi...now I know why...he was in Wales the next morning...that would of been a long drive!!!!!:o:eek:;)

Anyway that's my report....must dash...take care all

great reviews, pictures and links everyone. Dirk as Columbo isn't coming near to where I am, but I'm seriously considering going to one of the dates somewhere and stay in a hotel or something. Noted this from one of the interviews posted:

Dirk: "My plan is for Lt. Columbo to be my Swan Song as an actor; and devote whatever time I have left on this planet to expressing myself with words."

Saw Dirk in Columbo again today, took a long train journey to Wolverhampton with 2 changes along the way! But it was worth it..... he was great, & I thought he was very sweet when he accidentally got the lighter to work & for 2 seconds slipped out of character...... adorable!! Also heard today, from a reliable source after the show, that there is a possibility of the tour being extended.

I just wanted to say what a great atmosphere there was at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre matinee performance today of Prescription Murder..... Dirk thoroughly deserved
all the cheers throughout the show. It was particularly heartwarming to hear how the audience (myself included) welcomed his entrance with cheers as he announced himself as Lt Columbo & when he first delivered the line "just one more thing". Bravo Mr Benedict!!! Well done to all.....& God bless Peter Falk!

I find this "cameo" insulting. Not even a cameo, considering both Dirk and Dwight's clip is less than 40 seconds long, AND pushed back to after the END credits! Who stays for the credits in a movie theater? They're all too busy pushing out the doors to get to the parking lot to avoid the gridlock.

What a waste...

Agreed. Although I've heard good things about the movie and intend to see it at some point, this cameo thing is almost like "Oh, hey, let's throw the fans of the original series a bone, just for publicity." They certainly made a big deal of it before the release - and a lot of people were upset to find out they'd missed it, either because they hadn't stayed long enough or because the theaters actually stopped the film early.

Definitely a waste - and a bit of a fraud...

I still can't believe that they actually made this movie and I can't believe that good actors actually signed on to do this (Dirk, Dwight, Liam Neeson)film with the director of 'Smokin Aces'

Saw the actors on WWE Raw (can you tell I have a 12 year old boy) and somehow their appearance didn't motivate me to the theater. The 'actor' (actually a washed up UFC fighter) who plays BA...can we say LAME? My boy (who is a fan of the series) saw Bradley Cooper and commented "OMG Face has a receding hairline." LOL

Suffice to say I haven't seen this movie nor do I plan to.

Totally agreed. I don't doubt that it might be a good modern action flick, but in my eyes it is not and never will be an A-Team film. There is more to the Team than just plastering the names over new faces... Contrary to you, Ost, I am not planning on watching it, because I know it would only upset me to hear their names without being actually able to see the 'right' faces.

As to their cameos, it is such an insult to Dirk and Dwight to put their scenes after the credits, I can't even tell how angry that made me :mad:It feels as if on top of everything else they changed, the new producers are laughing about the old team, its fans and everything the team stood for. But is that really so surprising? I guess, I'm not the only fan of the old show who saw this coming  Now wait until the fans of the film, who never heard of the original team, start laughing about us too. :(

And sorry for ranting, but I'm still totally against this film, as much as I was against a re-imagined BSG...

Well, I wasn't fond of the movie until I read some of the interviews from the people involved. It appears that most (other than Liam Neesom) were fans of the original and wanted to be respectful of it while still updating it. And from clips I've seen, and comments from fans who have seen it (including many who went 'hunting for bear'), they did a good job in that respect. I do not understand their reasoning with the cameos, and do not like that whole faux pas, as stated above - but I'm not ready to condemn the movie as a whole before I've had a chance to see it. As to new fans - again, from comments it seems that many are now watching the series and enjoying that as well - so I don't see the backbiting and nastiness as happened with BSG. (But then BSG's experience was a total warping of the original, so that's a whole 'nother ballgame.)

...but I'm not ready to condemn the movie as a whole before I've had a chance to see it.

Oh, I'm not condemning the new movie, far from. As I said, I'm sure it is a good action movie, going by what is hip and requested by the audience these days. It is just my personal thing that I am not interested in another team and want 'my' guys only. Everyone else is entitled to their own opinion and I won't harass anyone who likes the new film.
I've read positive and negative reviews, so the audience is obviously not in one mind about it. And I've read somewhere that it is not the financial success the producers had hoped for. But I guess that depends on which article you read... :)

I really, really hope you're right there. As far as I am concerned, to live and let live is the motto and I don't understand people, who are badmouthing the original shows. There is room for both, everyone should watch what he or she likes. My problem is that I read some really nasty comments about original BSG (and Dirk) and felt upset, attacked and minor, only because I happen to like the original show. And that's something I absolutely don't like.

I can't believe that I'm saying this but I just saw and somehow I liked the movie. Bradley Cooper and Quinton Jackson are fit in their roles. Liam Neeson is not bad but I didn't like Sharlto Copley as Murdock.

Wasn't sure if I should post this or where. But really wanted to share: I watch The A-Team all the time in reruns and on dvd. My son is 3 and often watches with me or is at least in the room while it is on. He has taken to saying "Mommy sing the A-team." Which is me humming the theme song. I've been humming it for nearly a half hour this morning at his request. :-) Perhaps needless to say but I'm excited that at this young age he loves it nearly as much as I do :-)

Candi, it appears as if you are a resident on my planet! :) In fact, my son discovered the A-team and made me watch it with him when he was not too much older than your son; he turned 13 today so it was about 10 years ago.(Of course, he also found MacGyver too--another series that was completely off my radar.) There IS something very funny and campy about the series that makes it enjoyable to watch in 2010.

Happy viewing.

I really enjoyed the movie. Went to see it twice in theaters (staying until after the credits both times to be sure and see Dirk and Dwight though) It wasn't the series of course but I thought they did a good job. Especially when you watch other shows they've made into movies.. this one by comparison is really very well done. Though I was really disappointed to find that they had been booted to after the credits.. I think that was ill conceived. Given where those scenes were placed, it looks as though they only got "cameos" to get fans of the series to show up.

No details of which theatres. Also, I'm guessing that this will continue as a UK only tour, so sorry for Dirk fans elsewhere.

Well that sounds like Dirk has enjoyed this tour, if he's ready to do it again next year?

Perhaps we need a whole new section on 'Theatre' for this site, to complement Movie & Tv, and Cruises and Conventions etc?

Everyday I am on here waiting for updated new for this year. Seems like he doesn't want us anymore. I can't speak for others but I am very hurt. I have followed his career for over 30 years. Old TV movies, TV shows and anything I can read including his family. I have emailed and I know he never gets them. I think he is the best actor ever and still geogerous. Please come home to your loyal fans here in America. Yes Dirk, you do have them and if you and Dwight would take the time to get on Facebook you would see. Chat with us. Not just for the A-team your movies. Your great personalities. You guys are wonderful. Your the two funniest comedy team and everyone has said so, your charming, never know what your gonna say. We've seen that on your interviews on the internet. You deserve your own show and it would be a hit. But it should be here at home in Montana or Maryland. Think about it. Can anyone tell me why Dirk is not in the movie strike. I watched it the other day and did not see him. His movie screen said he was a character in the movie. I looked everywhere and did not see him. That's the only reason I bought the movie. Also, how do I get information on how to use Threads. I am new at this. Thanks, Beverly USA Tenn, #1 fan for over 30 years.

Was Dirk ever in a movie called strike? I ordered one and it stated he was. I never saw him one time in the movie. I asked a few days ago but no one has had an answer yet. does anyone know what web site I can go to find out why. I only ordered it because he was suppose to have been in it. It was about a strike in Poland. Thanks! Beverly

Hi, Beverly! And a belated welcome!

To answer this question, because I don't know the answer to the movie question, someone who does know the answer needs to read your posts. I know that sounds simplistic, but that's the reality!

There are also a couple of message board tricks you can do to bring more attention to specific questions, too. I'll be happy to help you out with those, but right now I'm literally on my way out the door to work and won't have internet access until this evening. More then!

I don't know of any movie concerning a strike in Poland. He was in "Goldene Zeiten", where he played a television character named John Striker (among others). He was also in a movie about WWII called "Recon 7 Down" (video released as "Inglorious Bumblers" for some reason). Those would be the closest I can think of to what you describe.

Where did you hear about "Strike"?

Hi Beverly, I'm not really sure either. I haven't even seen the movie, but I will see if I can investigate a bit online, don't know how successful I will be though. In the interim, I am sure someone will be able to answer that. LA:)

Hi Iambarry, I printed off a movie list of Dirk off of Dirk Benedict Central. It's the first one listed and states his character was Douglas "Doug" Burnett. Believe it or not I found the same movie Strike and it listed Dirk playing 3 different characters.

I think someone did a big boo boo at my expense. The movie I ordered was very good, but I was disappointed Dirk was not in it. Some of the web sites needs to be more careful on what they say Dirk played in. Now I have another question. Can I buy Golden Zeiten and Recon 7 to be shipped to my home, or do I have to join a web site and pay a monthly fee to watch them like a couple of other of his movies. Thank you so much for your help. Beverly Perkins

Dirk is never coming back home to the USA is he. How long has he been in the UK. I know he has had work and his son plays ball. But, his fan of over 35 years misses him. All I get is the computer. I miss him and his wonderful personality so much. He makes me laugh and I need that. I am very ill. Just wanted the UK to know how lucky you are.

OK - I see the confusion here. "Strike!" was the working title for "Goldene Zeiten" - it's the same movie. So when you ordered "Strike!" they sent you a different film than the one you thought you were ordering.

Myself, I'd search Amazon.com for Goldene Zeiten and Recon 7; my feeling is that if they're available on home video (and I'm pretty sure at least one of them is), Amazon would have it listed.

There are no doubt other sites that would have the movies, too - anyone else have any suggestions?

OK - a quick basic message board tutorial sounds in order.

It helps if you think of a message board like a family tree - the trunk is the message board, each branch is a forum, which can split into smaller branches (sub-forums), and then each leaf is a unique conversation (or "thread").

So: Dirk's Works is the message board for Dirk Benedict Central, and the message board is made up of forums like "Website Updates," "Cruises and Conventions," etc. Each forum can also have sub-forums, which act to break out more specific topics from the overall forum subject.

Within each forum are the individual conversations that fall within the subject matter of the forum. Those conversations are made up of the string of individual posts - A "Thread" of conversation of one specific topic. This Thread is the "Major Dirk News!!!!!!!!!!" thread.

So - you are posting in the "Major Dirk News!!!!!!!!!!!" thread of the "Movie and TV work reviews" sub-forum of the "Dirk Benedict" forum of this message board.

And what it's doing here I have no idea....... ;)

I mentioned this morning that there are a couple of message board "tricks" you can use to bring attention to a specific question. One of those "tricks" is to create a new thread when you have a question or want to introduce a new topic that hasn't been covered before. To do that, simply choose the appropriate forum (or sub-forum), and use the "Topic" button at the upper left. That takes you to a different screen, where you enter the subject you want to discuss, and an area where you can type your message.

To post an image in an existing thread, use the "Reply" button at the bottom of the page rather than the "Quick Reply" box. It takes you to the same screen you get when starting a new topic (thread), which includes a "Manage Attachments" area where you can upload an image. (Be sure to keep the image appropriate for family viewing, of course.) ;)

Dirk has had a string of appearances in Great Britain, and his son is playing soccer in Europe (and doing quite well by all reports), which has kept him in Europe longer than we might have anticipated (but he's only been there for a few months). However, Dirk's home is here, and he is scheduled to appear here in the States in the near future.

Boy, that was a long post - and I certainly hope it helped.

I got both movies on eBay. There are a lot of places that sell DVDs online - just google the titles and "DVD" (I always google 'discount' as well :D)
